A powerful ocean current claimed the life of a British mother on Tuesday as she attempted to save her two young sons in Bahamian waters.

The incident occurred near the southern point of North Bimini, a popular destination for water sports. Local police report that the family was snorkeling together when the sea conditions suddenly shifted. The strong flow of water swept both boys away from the group. While the parents tried to reach their children, the force of the current also pulled the mother out of the shallow area. The two boys were eventually pulled from the water and rescued. The mother was also retrieved from the sea but was found unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Officers from the Alice Town police station responded to the scene immediately after receiving the report. They discovered that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for emergency medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, a local doctor pronounced her dead at the facility. The woman was 36 years old. Her husband was present during the outing and was also involved in the initial rescue efforts. The preliminary investigation indicates that no foul play is suspected in the incident.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has opened a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of death. An autopsy is scheduled to take place as part of this process. The force released a statement on social media to confirm the preliminary details of the event. They noted that the woman was brought to the ferry dock where CPR was administered before she was moved to the clinic. The statement emphasized that the family is being supported by local officials during this difficult time.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed its awareness of the case. A spokesperson stated that their thoughts are with the family of the deceased. Officials are currently in contact with local authorities to provide consular support to the family. The agency is coordinating with the police to ensure the family receives the necessary assistance while they are abroad.

North Bimini is part of a small island group situated between Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas, and Miami, Florida. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The area is well known for its clear waters and historical significance as a former home of writer Ernest Hemingway. The islands also host a prominent shark research center, attracting visitors from around the world for both leisure and scientific purposes.

The family’s tragedy highlights the risks associated with recreational water activities in the region. While the area is popular for its natural beauty, ocean currents can change rapidly. The investigation will continue to provide clarity on the specific conditions that led to the accident. The local community and authorities are working to support the family as they navigate the aftermath of this sudden loss.
