TikTok is facing serious accusations from its own ranks. Current and former employees have stated that the company profited from illegal videos depicting the exploitation of minors. The workers also allege that the platform ignored internal warnings regarding the safety of young people and the verification of their ages. According to reports, these issues were flagged internally but were not adequately resolved by those in charge.
The timeline of these complaints traces back to specific actions taken within the company's internal systems. Employees began raising alarms about minors appearing in sexual content on the app. They noted that viewers could pay to access such material, allowing the company to profit from it. The employees argued that this practice has the potential to be a financial crime.
In addition to the exploitation of minors, staff reported that users under 18 were bypassing age restrictions. Some users also blocked parents or guardians from reviewing their activity on the app. Documents indicate that the company chose not to conduct surveys to verify user ages. The reasoning was a concern over having to turn those results over to the Federal Trade Commission.
Concerns were also raised regarding content related to suicide and self-harm. Employees stated that the platform did not take proper steps to tackle these issues. According to the reports, social media companies are required by law to report suspected child sexual abuse material. They must also report suspicions regarding money obtained illegally through their platforms.
The situation involves senior leaders who were reportedly aware of the problems. Employees have stated that the responses from these leaders were inadequate. The company has pushed back against the reports. A statement from TikTok said the claims were clearly cherry-picked at the behest of trial lawyers.
The company also stated that these reports were used to inaccurately rewrite its history. TikTok maintains that it is committed to youth safety and disputes the characterization of how its platform works. The app remains popular on the App Store and has a high proportion of teenage users. No timeline for further action regarding these allegations has been set.
